Programme overview

This programme will demystify key sustainability concepts and provide participants with an in-depth understanding of why sustainability is now a critical issue for all businesses (people, planet and profit). The course will explore key issues for sustainability in business, identify which issues to prioritise, and identify sustainability KPIs for their business (scorecard) which can be used for ESG and sustainability reporting. A key deliverable of the programme will be to build a science-based sustainability action plan for your organisation.
The programme enable students to root their learning in their jobs and companies through the use of case studies. Peer-to-peer learning from, and the development of an on-going support network, of likeminded sustainability champions and professionals is a key value-added of the course.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
On completing this programme participants will:
- Understand the context of the sustainability challenge and need for a comprehensive strategic response from their company.
- Use the UN Sustainable Development Goals as an overarching framework to guide sustainability action in their company.
- Understand how to assess sustainability risks and opportunities for their business.
- Have a comprehensive understanding of the environmental and social impacts of their company using a materiality assessment approach.
- Know how to develop science-based KPIs to measure and monitor sustainability impact.
- Be aware of relevant ESG reporting standards and ratings and how they apply to their organisation.
- Have mapped their organisation to UN SDGs, carried out a materiality assessment & developed a sustainability scorecard for their organisation.
- Be equipped to act and lead for sustainability within their organisation.
COURSE PRACTICALITIES
- Upon completion of this course, participants will obtain a micro-credential qualification of 5ECTS.
- The course will be delivered in a hybrid mode which will include 2 full days in person at the Sustainability Institute, University College Cork and 4 x 2-hour online sessions.
- A multidisciplinary perspective will be offered through contributions from academics from across disciplines in UCC and key industry professionals.
